Anniversaries Galore in Provincetown

April 15th, 2014

Happy Anniversary Provincetown! Some of our favorite places and annual events will be popping the cork and drinking some bubbly to celebrate. Come join us.

Happy Anniversary Provincetown!

PAAM – One Hundred

A century ago, painters Charles Hawthorne and E. Ambrose Webster collaborated with other artists and business men and women to create the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. That same bond between the community and PAAM is alive and thriving today. Board President Jim Bakker says, “This is going to be a summer to remember. Mark your calendars for the weekend of August 22nd, become a member and be a part of history!” A full calendar of programs and special events is available at PAAM – One Hundred

Bring your easel and paints for a re-creation of the iconic picture of a beach full of painters on a sunny day (ala Henry Hensche) on Sunday, June 1st 8AM-2PM for Painters on the Beach: A Plein Air Celebration. Or, have a delicious brunch at the Mews (Happy 50th) Restaurant and watch artists at work.

Women’s Week – Thirty
October 10th to the 18th, 2014

Started in 1984 with an informal gathering of a group of then-new women innkeepers and their friends over a clambake in the fall, Women’s Week is now 150 events, performances, book signings and entertainment. Author and performer Kate Clinton says, “In its 30th year, Women’s Week is Dyke Dynasty without the camo, rifles and usual facial hair. All are welcome to a great gathering of the tribe, a harvest of fun and laughs in the autumnal beauty of Ptown.”

The fest’s official program is a wonderfully massive publication that makes it easy to know what’s going on. Distributed to hotels, B&B’s, restaurants and retailers, Provincetown welcomes women from all over the world.

Women’s Week culminates in a now-very famous Saturday Night Dance.
I always love to see Kate Clinton throwing around a football. Hike!

Berta Walker Gallery – Twenty-Five

Widely known as Provincetown’s “other art museum,” Berta Walker Gallery has a brilliant series of exhibitions planned to celebrate her 25th anniversary at 208 Bradford Street. About this pivotal year, Berta says, “My biggest joy is joining our success with our wonderful non-profit institutions on the Outer Cape. We are having many fundraisers: one for the Fishermen’s Memorial Sculpture created by Romolo Del Deo (May 23 to June 15) called "Going Fishing, A Tribute to our Industry", the subject of the very first exhibition at the gallery 25 years ago to support the Blessing of the Fleet. Our second benefit will be for the Centennial Celebration of PAAM (August 22 to September 14) with a show of Provincetown Masters from the last one hundred years.”

Berta Walker is now affiliated in her real estate capacity as a Sales Consultant with Atlantic Bay/Sotheby’s International Realty. Annual income made from referrals by Berta to Provincetown’s oldest real estate company will be donated to the Provincetown Fisherman’s Memorial. She asks that you allow her to refer you to Atlantic Bay/Sotheby’s International Realty if you renting, buying or selling in 2014.

The Provincetown International Film Festival – Sixteen

For five days, June 18-22nd, Provincetown is transformed into ‘Sundance East', with David Cronenburg (THE FLY, CRASH, NAKED LUNCH) as the 2014 Filmmaker on the Edge. Artistic Director Connie White says, “His work brings a playful, adventurous and smart sensibility to our sixteenth year. You don’t want to miss Cronenberg and John Waters in a conversation at Town Hall on Saturday, June 21st.”

White continues, "The festival has grown to include young adults participating in youth and diversity programming, in the audience and also as filmmakers in a new short films program themed Teenage Confidential.”

She is also thrilled to give festival goers a sneak preview of the newly restored HARD DAYS NIGHT fifty years after its release. The Provincetown International Film Festival continues to raise the bar by offering the best of independently produced cinema from around the world. I think this is going to be a very sweet year to attend PIFF.

Provincetown Theater - Ten
Since the realization of a permanent home at 238 Bradford ten years ago, the Provincetown Theater continues to showcase original new plays as well as classic works. The 2014 season brings productions of A PERFECT GANESH, HAMLET (adult and youth), RENT and FOUR SQUARED: A Collaborative Theater Project.

Board Member/ Director Patrick Falco recalls, “I remember being so excited to be asked by then Managing/Artistic Director Guy Wolf to direct the inaugural production, John Guare’s signature piece, THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES, in which you, Laura, along with Guy Wolf and Lee Roscoe headed a cast of twelve. It was a smashing success!”

He continues, “I am forever indebted to the generosity of Alix Ritchie and all who helped support the building of a theater.”

It is truly wonderful to see new endeavors blossom into an enduring and essential part of the culture and hubris of Provincetown. A warm congratulation also goes to the Mews for their fiftieth, the Lobster Pot for thirty-five years and the Coffee Pot for twenty-five.
