Schooners, Swimmers, Classic Cars and Broadway Legends!

August 28th, 2013

The Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta, Monday September 2nd through Friday, September 6th, celebrates the role of the Great Atlantic fishing bank schooner in Provincetown’s maritime history while providing educational opportunities for residents and visitors to experience these historic vessels both in port and at sea.

You'll marvel at the romance of these lovely ships, as well as the skills of the captains and crews!

The first Provincetown Schooner Race was organized in 2002 by Provincetown resident Captain John Bennett of the schooner Hindu. Although Captain Bennett did not live to see his dream come to fruition, the committee that he had formed hosted the inaugural regatta that September in his honor. Eleven years later the tradition continues, with the Fisherman's Cup Race from Gloucester to Provincetown on September 3rd, public viewing of schooners and catboats at MacMillan Pier on the 4th and 5th, an Open House at the Coast Guard station Thursday morning, a parade of sail in the Harbor Friday morning, and the Long Point Schooner and Yacht race in the afternoon. The event closes Friday night with a BBQ and Crew Party with live music and dancing. The public is invited and tickets are $25.

Both the Schooner Estrela (pictured above) and the Schooner Perception (see below) are returning for a second year in a row, and other vessels participating include the Ardelle, the Adventurer, Provincetown's Bay Lady II, the Irena and the Tyrone. You'll marvel at the romance of these lovely ships, as well as the skills of the captains and crews! All events are free and open to the public, except where noted on the website.

As the schooners depart, hundreds of swimmers and kayakers, friends and 150 volunteers gather in town to participate in the 26th Annual Provincetown Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla. Since its beginning in 1988, $3 million has been raised, and from an intimate gathering of sixteen swimmers who raised $6,000 to last year’s 400 swimmers who raised over $200,000, this post-Labor Day fundraiser has become the quintessential Provincetown tradition. The popular weekend will feature the Swim on Saturday, September 7 at the Boatslip Resort, with the Celebration of Life Concert, produced by John Thomas, scheduled for the night before at the UU Meeting House.

This benefit event supports AIDS, women's health and a variety of local community programs! All events are free and open to the public, although swimmers/kayakers need to offer a minimum of $100 in pledges to participate. The Swim is 1.4 miles long, from Long Point to The Boatslip Resort, and welcomes both competitive and non-competitive swimmers. Visit their website for more information as well as registration and pledge forms.

If you've ever admired a classic car, you will drool over the fabulous antiques at the Yankee Lambda Annual Invitational car show and parade! The highlights of the visit include the chance to view all these delicious vehicles on MacMillan Pier on September 7th, as well as an afternoon motorcade of all the participating cars through streets of Provincetown. The theme of this year's event is "Yankee Mardi Gras," so be prepared for a jazzy and flashy event! Bring you camera and spend your day dreaming of your fantasy car!

Last but definitely not least, why not round out your weekend with a Broadway legend? On September 7th and 8th, the presents two-time Tony winner Chita Rivera for only two performances! Making her Provincetown debut this year, this accomplished and versatile actress/singer/dancer won two Tonys as Best Leading Actress in a Musical and received seven additional Tony nominations. Chita was awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, and the coveted Kennedy Center Honor in 2002, becoming the first Latina to receive the award. You will not want to miss her!
