Miss Universe Float - Originality Winner. |
Carnival Picture Album
Notes from Land's End: Aug. 21
By Laura Shabott
August 21st, 2012
The excitement was unbridled with this year’s 2012 Provincetown Business Guild’s Carnival Parade themed “Space Odyssey: 2012”. Earthlings, astronauts and a large number of men in drag jam-packed Commercial Street to her maximum capacity. Aliens had landed all over the porches and dormers where people partied and waited in anticipation.

The crowd-pleasing parade began at 3:00 p.m. at the Far East End with a wonderful array of floats, dancers and noted glitterati such as Sharon Lynn, Town Manager, The Hat Sisters and,of course, the bawdy Brewster Tennis Club. Beads and confetti flew from the floats and cars to the sounds of cheers and a bass beat.
Well ahead of its arrival, you could hear the thumping of space-related dance numbers. Costumed couples stopped mid-stroll to be swarmed by a host of Carnival paparazzi.

And it began. The parade started with three of our local policemen on motorcycles – tres butch . . . Then the Announcing Banner from the PBG and the dancing, rocking, bead-throwing, costumed marvels on floats, in buses and hitting the streets went by for well over forty minutes. The crowds swelled and just fell in love with the outer space theme.
PFLAG had a great group of Conehead Dancers beautifully choreographed in the middle of a heat wave rivaling New Orleans itself. Miss Universe captured our hearts, with its Best Originality award and Marc Jacobs, a noted Provincetown philanthropist, for Best Musical.
A great time was had by all.
The Crown and Anchor’s CLOSE ENCOUNTER CLOSING PARTY named the Best Of – Parade Participants as:
Overall: Ten Tables
Large Float: Brass Key
Small Float: Gay Lactica
Walking: Freedom Trail Band
Self Propelled: Swim 4 Life
Originality: Miss Universe
Musical: Marc Jacobs
Honorable Mention: Moon Tennis
If you have never been to Carnival Week, place your bets for 2013’s Viva Las Vegas, August 18th thru the 24th.
