Notes from Land's End: Aug. 13

August 13th, 2012

Mardi Gras meets the Beach when Carnival Week comes to Provincetown. Parties, cruises and dance extravaganzas prepare us for Thursday’s parade beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the East End’s Harbor Hotel and ending in the West End at the Provincetown Inn. Thousands of people collecting beads will line the street to see scantily-clothed dancers and musicians on wildly decorated floats winding down Commercial Street.

This year’s theme, “Ptown: A Space Odyssey”, will have its share of Spocks and Barbarellas starting Sunday, August 12th to Friday, August 17th. For certain, the costumes will be out of this world. Sponsored by the Provincetown Business Guild, a Vulcan VIP Pass ($99.00) gives stellar access to ten events including Tuesday’s Intergalactic Boat Cruise (8/14) with Bay State Cruises and Ptown Parties. Be ready to board at 5:30P.M. at MacMillan Pier for an out of sight evening. ($25.00 a person or with VIP Pass)

Go to Carnival Headquarters daily from 11:00A.M. to 5:00P.M. at the Firehouse next to Town Hall at 256 Commercial Street for beads, t-shirts, posters and souvenirs like a Green Alien Water Bottle for $5.00. Passes and event tickets are also available.

The “only-in-Provincetown” iconic Drag Bingo happens Wednesday, August 15th, on the lawn of the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House at 236 Commercial Street. Put on a dress or a tux and moustache, pop $24.00 and try your luck! It certainly will be unforgettable.

Thursday brings the tsunami-sized rush of visitors who pour into town to stake a claim early in the day by tailgating a piece of sidewalk, grabbing a table at the Boatslip Resort’s Buoy Bar or on the porch of guest houses like the White Wind Inn.

The thumping bass of a loud dance song announces floats from the Chamber of Commerce and the Provincetown Film Festival; beads fly from a Funk Bus; children throw candy from town fire trucks; liquor purveyors like Bacardi bring lithe dancers to town.

Friday, August 17th, brings the revelry back to Earth with "The Close Encounter Closing Party” at the Crown and Anchor. DJ Joe Gauthreaux spins us into orbit at the Paramount and VJ Tom Yaz will travel to other dimensions in the Wave Bar. A portion of the $15.00 cover charge goes to the Provincetown Business Guild. (Included in Vulcan VIP pass)

The Force (of Star Wars fame) is certainly with the Provincetown Business Guild for sponsoring this amazing thematic summer extravaganza.

Guest Photographer Dan McKeon is a true man about town, with his extraordinary work seen at The Provincetown Business Guild’s website, Provincetown Magazine’s pages and on Facebook.

“Notes from Lands End”, by artistic bon vivant Laura Shabott, is a weekly account of the people, places and events that make our town so special.
