A Purely Wonderful Provincetown New Year

Notes from Land's End: Dec. 28

December 28th, 2011

Since the days of whalers and pirates, Provincetown has garnered a reputation for knowing how to throw a great party. Imagine getting in your car and taking the bus or a plane to ring in 2012, in a purely Provincetown way.

There’s no finer way to ring in 2012 than a rocking party in Provincetown.

You’ll come into town along Route 6, seeing the Monument lit up against a glorious sunset, that gunmetal winter color of the ocean spectacular in the sweeping vista. Luckily, there was a last minute cancellation at Boston Mag’s “Best of Cape”, The Harbor Hotel 698 Commercial. With their reasonable prices, the cost of a Cape Cab (508-487-2222) will mean great nights out and a safe ride home. Priceless! Let’s go out on the town:

Friday Night 12/30

After ordering a quick meal at the hotel’s Whaler Lounge, we go to Karaoke at the Governor Bradford, for kicks. You sing “Crazy” surprisingly well. Drag Persona Dana Danzel is the life of any party with an outstanding Karaoke selection and a powerhouse voice. At the corner of Standish and Commercial, there is no cover. Next, it’s a crawl along the strip, stopping at the Wave Bar to the mixing of VJ Tom Yaz and hip-grinding disco with DJ David LaSalle at the A- House.

New Years Eve 12/31

Well, we haven’t partied like that since the last time we were in Provincetown. Luckily, there’s an opening for a massage and a facial at the Shui Spa, 82 Bradford, part of the Crowne Pointe Historic Inn and Spa. With its tranquil whirlpool, exquisite steam room and a wonderful staff, the experience will renew and restore, priced on 12/31/2011 at $99.00.

A lovely ocean walk along the harbor to the hotel adds to this delightful day. The people in your newfound group of friends get ready for a dinner at the Crown’s Central House. Consummate performer Bobby Wetherbee is at the piano bar belting out Porter and Broadway. Everyone joining along is what makes him one of Provincetown’s most enduring performers.

It’s off to the Paramount for Resolution 2012, New Years Eve (9:30pm to close), with DJs Mike Swells and Steve Marsden. We all can’t believe it’s no cover as we wait to get in.

Mike Swells is the resident DJ at RISE, Boston's only after-hours nightclub. His 5+ hour sets for the club's community of open-minded music aficionados have created quite a following in the club scene. Marsden is a Cape Cod boy coming back home to be the resident DJ at the Crown and Anchor this summer, bringing a multi-genre sound to the dance floor.

At midnight, we’ll toast with free champagne, rocking in the New Year with friends, new and old.

New Years Day 1/1/2012

After a wonderful stay, we check out and follow the rumor that people jump into the Harbor in Polar Bear Fashion at Noon on New Years Day. Sure enough, a motley group of locals throw themselves into the frigid waters behind the Lobster Pot. Not to be missed.

Starving, it’s time for our reservation at the Mews Restaurant, 429 Commercial Street, for their PJ Brunch. The staff wears their jammies and so can you, while sipping a Bloody Mary from a choice of over 277 vodkas, exotic garnishes and selecting from a full brunch menu. We get oyster shooters and omelets made to perfection.

There’s no finer way to ring in 2012 than a rocking party in Provincetown.

“Notes from Lands End”, by artistic bon vivant Laura Shabott, is a weekly account of the people, places and events that make our town so special.
