Miss Richfields and friends at the Beaux Arts Ball. |
Beaux Arts Ball
Notes from Land's End: Nov. 1
By Laura Shabott
November 1st, 2011
Marc Jacobs International teamed up with PAAM and the Town of Provincetown to throw one of the wildest, lavish parties and fundraisers that this reporter can remember.
 | Sharon Lynn said, “Robert Duffy, the Marc Jacobs International staff and Brian Rafinelli’s team of event coordinators did a spectacular job that we'll be talking about for months to come!” |

During the weeks prior to Saturday night, October 29th, the anticipation for the revival of the Beaux Arts Ball was tremendous. Tickets ($25.00 each) were snapped up at the Marc Jacobs store and at Town Hall earlier in the month.
Some residents felt that the 200 ticket reserve for Jacobs’ clan was elitist, while others protested that it shouldn’t have been held on Halloween weekend. However one felt about it, the upcoming extravaganza was the buzz topic around town.

With a Nor’easter in progress, this spirited event began in a tent, where over eight hundred partygoers presented their tickets, now precious as gold. A group of onlookers watched as goblins, ghosts, bumblebees, marvelous masked creatures and an astronaut ascended the staircases into the auditorium.
Blue lights made an eerie hue in a netherworld of ghoulish decorations that transformed Town Hall into a ghostly party. A friendly staff served delicious morsels of sliders, sweet potato fries and tuna treats throughout the night. Four open bars gave out copious amounts of tasteful wines, beer and bubbly to an ecstatic crowd.
Music ranged from trance to “The Time Warp”, as hundreds of costumed dancers stepped to the right and did the pelvic thrust, singing at the top of their lungs.
Provincetown’s own “Thriller” flash mob was brilliant in the middle of a rocking dance floor. Then, the room got quiet as Debbie Harry stepped onto the stage, gorgeous as ever, to a burst of applause. Revelers couldn’t help singing along with her in this once-in-a-lifetime moment.
A Pan Am stewardess and pilot flirted with the Miss Richfields (two of her?) and a great time was had by all.
Getting home was another story, with this scantily-clad mermaid and her pirate racing for a taxi, while a drenched local, resplendent in her gown and headdress, was locked out of her car. She reported getting home safely.
Photographs were up on Facebook, starting early Sunday morning, with fantastic pics and videos by Jim Bakker, Danielle Freeman Erdogen, Dan McKeon and Amy Weiss already viral in Internet circles.
“Robert Duffy's amazingly generous gifts to the Town of Provincetown continued this past weekend with the very successful, fun Beaux Arts Ball.” said Sharon Lynn, Town Manager, marvelous in her puffin costume. “The long-standing tradition was revived to showcase the splendor of the newly-renovated and restored Town Hall Auditorium. Robert Duffy, the Marc Jacobs International staff and Brian Rafinelli’s team of event coordinators did a spectacular job that we'll be talking about for months to come!”
Christine M. McCarthy, Executive Director of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, said “Robert Duffy and Marc Jacobs International deserve the utmost amount of praise for organizing and executing the Beaux Arts Ball. From the kids’ activities in the afternoon to the stunning décor and community involvement – it was a first class event that not only provided the highest level of creative entertainment, but helped propel the economy for our local businesses. [We] are very fortunate to have Robert as part of this community!”
The town-wide party continued, with Spooky Bear Tea Dance, David Mazochi's Ghost Town, Costumed Karaoke at the Governor Bradford and Space Pussy playing at the Crown and Anchor. Boo!
