Provincetown’s comedians love to make fun of the town’s special theme weeks. Bear Week, especially is a favorite target – the name is just too irresistible. But it’s also a measure of how much the town, and its performers, love the bears. They are favorite annual guests, and the town always lays out a large welcome mat for them.

This year Provincetown’s Bear Week will take place between July 12 and 19, and there is a full roster of events on the schedule to keep these hirsute darlings happy.
Organized by the Provincetown Bears, the weeklong event always attracts a wide variety of men. Muscle bound or heavyset, lushly haired or barer, often fully bearded, sometimes bedecked in leather and always manly, bears of all sizes and types are welcome during Bear Week.
Highlights of the week include the “Woof on the Wharf” welcome party at Bayside Betsy’s, the annual night at the A-House with DJ David LaSalle, a disco night at Club Purgatory, and a contra dancing party at the Boatslip Resort. There will also be a “Vault at Large” party on July 16 and the popular annual “Firemen’s Ball” on July 18, both at The Crown’s Paramount.
Meanwhile, many other events are on the schedule, including boat cruises, pool parties and tea dances, karaoke and dune tours, a jazz brunch and even a tour of Provincetown’s Masonic Lodge. During Bear Week, many of the town’s performers also offer special shows.
