Easing into Autumn

August 29th, 2014

If you've been holding off on your vacation until the biggest crowds have gone home, now is your time to consider indulging in a little Labor Day and post-holiday relaxation and fun!

On September 4th, find yourself a great viewing spot on shore and enjoy the parade of sail in Provincetown Harbor, starting at 10:30 am!

Autumn begins a season of benefit events to support the many worthy nonprofits in the area, which enables them to carry on through winter providing services, education, care and support to the community. First up is the 28th Annual ASGCC Live Art Auction on August 30th at Town Hall! For 27 years, local artists have donated their time and art to help support the work of the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, and on this Saturday before Labor Day the tradition continues! The event features the amazing Jim Bakker as auctioneer, and beautiful works of art, which will be on display beginning at 2PM, with the live auction event beginning at 6PM. Light appetizers and beverages will be served. Please come show your support and go home with a new original piece of art! All proceeds from this event directly benefit the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, which provides many services to those living with HIV including medical case management, peer support, nutritional and housing support, counseling in self-care and stress reduction, and much more.

September 1st marks the beginning of the 12th annual Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta, which will bring a dozen of these gorgeous and historic vessels to Town! The two oldest vessels, both built in 1925, are the Hindu (built in East Boothbay, ME) and the Adventurer (built in Mystic, CT), and the newest ship, Istar, was built by Charles “Stormy” Mayo in the driveway of his home on Bradford Street! Visitors will have the opportunity to tour many of the schooners and catboats at MacMillan Pier on September 3rd from 1-3 pm, and select schooners will be scheduling day sails all day. On September 4th, find yourself a great viewing spot on shore and enjoy the parade of sail in Provincetown Harbor, starting at 10:30 am! At noon, the Long Point Schooner Yacht Race begins charting a course out of the harbor into Cape Cod Bay. Limited tickets are available to view the race from vessels at sea. Schooners licensed to carry passengers include the Bay Lady II, the Schooner Hindu, Schooner Tyrone, Schooner Ardelle, and Schooner Fame, so don't miss the chance of a lifetime, and reserve a day sail ticket with one of these glorious reminders of sailing history!

As the schooners glide their way out of town, it's time to put on your water wings, drag out your kayaks, and put on cheer-leading gear for the 27th annual Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla on Saturday the 6th! This fundraiser of the Provincetown Community Compact supports vital year round services for AIDS, women’s health and the community. Come share with us the special relationships we have established and the community we have created through the healing waters of Provincetown Harbor. Enjoy sun, surf and fun, and leave with the glow of knowing you've done something good for others in need! To “prep” for this event, check out the 20th Celebration of Life concert on Friday the 5th at 8 pm. It's free, and is Provincetown’s longest running free music festival. Hundreds of local and visiting performers have shared their talents throughout the years, and this year’s performers include Jon Arterton, Peter Donnelly, Billy Hough, Zoë Lewis, James Mack, Miss Richfield 1981, Sylvie Richard, Scarbie, John Thomas, West End Wendy Wendell and many other surprises!
