The Road to Summer

Early May Happenings

April 28th, 2014

May is the sweet and sunny reward on the road to summer, when the air is full of new energy, new life and new activity. Here in Provincetown, we know how to get into the swing of spring!

Ferries start running on May 16th, so you can take off any weekend from Boston and leave your car at home!

The month starts on an athletic and charitable “high,” with the 6th annual Run to the Top benefit at the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum on May 3rd. This race is a timed run to the top of the Monument in which firefighters make the climb in full “turnout”, or fire-fighting gear. However, you don't have to be a firefighter to do the run – you just have to have strong legs and a sense of adventure! All proceeds from the run benefit the Cape Cod Firefighter/EMS Cancer Relief Fund. The event also features silent auctions and raffles, food and drink, activities for kids and live music!

The Soup Kitchen in Provincetown (SKIP) is holding a benefit on May 3rd at the Crown & Anchor. Revel in a gourmet dining experience and concert by "Well Strung," the sexy, singing string quartet to benefit SKIPs programs. Reservations are required; for tickets, call SKIP at 508-487-8331!

The following weekend has something for everyone, from road races to a day to spoil the “Mom” you love! On May 9-10, come on down and cheer the runners of the Ragnar Relay, as they arrive in town after an overnight relay road race from Hull, MA! The Ragnar Relay takes teams of runner through some of the most scenic spots in the Northeast. Pristine beaches, historic towns and towering lighthouses guide runners toward the finish line party where teams finish together and celebrate Ragnar Style! This race has something for everyone, from the beginner athlete to the veteran runner.

Bring your mom to town on May 11th for a lovely brunch and some shopping! There will be more activity, as more stores open for the season. If the whole family is taking mom out, she'll love the yummy brunch at Fanizzi's, which offers stunning views of the Bay, a fabulous and varied brunch buffet, great staff and reasonable prices! Want something a little jazzier? Try the Sunday brunch at Tin Pan Alley, where you also get some smooth live piano and vocals with your meal!

Shopping? Visit Kiss and Makeup at their new location opposite the Crown and Anchor – it's twice the size of their previous location! Then a trip to Impulse Art Gallery might be in order! They offer a stunning collection of dichroic glass, wildly decorative (and collectible!) marbles, hand-crafted jewelry, gorgeous collectible kaleidoscopes, unique and unusual ceramics, and more. Whatever your budget, or Mom's taste, you'll find something that's sure to please!

Mother's Day is closely followed by the middle of May, when the ferries, operated by Bay State Cruise Company and Boston Harbor Cruises, start running on May 16th, so you can take off any weekend from Boston and leave your car at home! Bay State will also run an early-morning trip from Provincetown to Boston on Mondays at 6:30am running June 30-August 25th and Tuesday September 2nd, so you can extend your weekend a bit and still get to work on time .
