High-Summer Entertainment

July 30th, 2013

It’s the height of the summer season in Provincetown, and whether you come for a weekend of sunbathing and sailing, or for shopping, there are still many more ways to dazzle your nights.

When you walk in, you don't know if you'll be seeing Electra channeling Judy Garland, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand or maybe…Lucille Ball?

At the Post Office Cabaret, "Electra! Living the Legends" is wowing the crowds in its first summer in Provincetown, and is attracting audiences from 8 to 80! This south Florida-based entertainer has been performing his one-man review for over 30 years nationwide, has been called "The King of Queens" and "the man of a thousand ladies," and impersonates a different entertainment "legend" in five different shows every week! When you walk in, you don't know if you'll be seeing Electra channeling Judy Garland, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand or maybe…Lucille Ball? It's stunning, sophisticated, and always a surprise.

Also at the Cabaret, you can enjoy the "Stars!" show with Abby Cummings from August 8-18. Scott Townsend, "Thirsty's" alter-ego, is regarded as one of the finest celebrity impersonators of the day, and is renowned for doing singer Cher “better than Cher does Cher”! His career spans 20 years, and he has played to packed houses country-wide. The show is of mix of old-school drag and cabaret, great comedic timing, and high-energy lounge acts from the Las Vegas glory days of the 1960s. In addition, drag ingénue Abby Cummings brings to life contemporary singers such as Adele and Christina Aguilera, so there is something for every age!

Tony-nominated singer/comedienne Sharon McKnight hits town for 10 shows, on August 5-9, and August 13-16 at the Crown Cabaret! She's received a Nightlife award from New York’s critics for her Best Musical Comedy show, "Ladies, Compose Yourselves!", featuring songs by "living" female composers. Songs in her repertoire include "Betty, Betty, Bette", celebrating the screen legends Grable, Hutton & Davis; "Songs To Offend Almost Everyone", a throwback to the party records of the 50's mixed with political and social satire; "Gone, But Not Forgotten", a tribute to the late ladies of stage & screen - Merman, Martha Raye, Madeline Kahn, Patsy Cline, & Judy Garland, and "The Sophie Tucker Songbook" which contains the music of the one-woman show based on the show business legend. She's jazzy, she's bawdy, and she's a hell of a lot of fun!

If you're at all familiar with the Outer Cape, you know they we are also famed for pirates and lost treasure (i.e. the Whydah Gally). On August 6, 7 and 8, you can enjoy a hysterical new "take" on these Robin Hoods of the sea with the show "The Greatest Pirate Story Never Told, at the Crown and Anchor! With their script torn asunder, a crew of pirates-turned-players is forced to improvise an epic pirate adventure based upon their audience's suggestions! Don't miss this hilarious, interactive musical where you write the story (and maybe end up on stage)!

Do you love good jazz? Then the 9th Annual Provincetown Jazz Festival is the place to be on August 17th. The Festival attracts Jazz musicians from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, and New Zealand, and a portion of their proceeds has always been donated to Provincetown and Cape Cod charities. This year, the 8 pm concert at Town Hall includes emcees Ron Robin and Suzanne Tonaire of radio 102.3 The Dunes, an opening act featuring jazz guitarist Jane Miller with Cercie Miller on sax and David Clark on bass, and the main act called New Guitar Summit, with guitar legend Jay Geils, Howard Alden from the Newport All-Stars, and vocalist/guitarist Gerry Beaudoin! Also included in the "jam" is Ron Ormsby on bass & Bart Weisman on drums.

Finally, don't miss chanteuse Ilona Royce-Smithkin and musician Zoe Lewis -- two of Provincetown's great musical treasures -- at their popular "Eyelash Cabaret," on August 12 at Provincetown Art Association and Museum!

Warm summer nights, laughter and music -- wouldn't you call that a perfect way to add enjoyment to your vacation?
