Off-season fun

Play like a local every night of the week

January 14th, 2013

You’d be surprised to find out that there’s something to do in Provincetown every night of the week even in the depth of winter! Don’t stay at home, bored with January. Come play with us!

The Provincetown Library is holding their January Free Movie Night at 6 pm in the Marc Jacobs Reading Room.

Monday nights find people congregating at the The Mews Coffee House. In its 22nd year, it is an open mic for writers, playwrights, poets, singers, songwriters, and comedians, with host and co-founder, singer songwriter Peter Donnelly. Coffeehouse is held Mondays at 8 pm, and is a benefit ($3 suggested) for various community organizations including Community Radio WOMR, Provincetown Theatre and Counter Productions. Open mic performers who wish to sign up may do so at 7:30, and in addition there is a featured performer each week. Scheduled entertainers include Grace Morrison & the RSO performing bluegrass and Celtic music on January 14th, and the band Sensible Shoes on January 28th.

After several weeks off, The Underground at 293 Commercial has re-opened for Tuesday Night Trivia, complete with pop culture questions and some cool music! The fun starts at 9 pm, and the winning team collects $25 in cash plus a $25 gift certificate to George’s Pizza.

On Wednesday nights, you have a couple of activities to choose from. The Provincetown Library is holding their January Free Movie Night at 6 pm in the Marc Jacobs Reading Room. Upcoming releases include “Why Stop Now,” a comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg, Oscar winner Melissa Leo, and Tracy Morgan on the 16th, the animated family film “Brave” by Pixar on the 23rd, and “Batman: The Dark Knight Rises” starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Gary Oldman on the 30th.
If you prefer something more competitive, come take on all challengers at the Wednesday night pool tournament, 6 pm at the Governor Bradford restaurant. This year-round hangout also hosts Drag Karaoke with Dana Danzel on Saturday nights at 9:30 pm. A favorite with locals and visitors alike, this hostess with the “mostest” will even sing and dance along with you as you perform! It’s hilarious and fun, and if you arrive early or tire of singing, there are backgammon boards to entertain you.

Perhaps you prefer a game with more than bragging rights, if that's the case you can head to the A-House at 9 pm to win some supper money at Drag Bingo Wednesday with Tiki Bronstein!
Locals exercise their thinking caps on Thursday night at Team Trivia, hosted by Lorraine’s restaurant. Come early, enjoy interesting food with a Mexican flair, join a team or bring your own! Begun five years ago by local resident Michelle Crone, it is co-facilitated by Jeannette de Beauvior. The brain-teasing fun begins at 7 pm.
The A-House also has the distinction of being open all year round, so you’re always welcome at their Dance Club on Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights from 10 pm to 1 am. Their resident DJ David LaSalle prides himself on presenting only the newest sounds in town, so don’t be surprised if you hear a song here before anywhere else.

On lazy winter Sundays, nothing says relaxation like a long, leisurely Sunday brunch! We have TWO great restaurants offering all-you-can-eat buffets! From 8 am to 1 pm, the Hot L Bar & Grille offers a brunch which includes eggs Benedict to corned beef to fresh fruit and oatmeal, with many items in between. At Fanizzi’s from 10 am to 2 pm, their buffet includes French toast, breakfast burritos, steamed mussels, pasta of the day, and my weakness, Danish and fresh pastries! Best of all, you can relax with a gorgeous waterfront view.
