Feed Your Spirits This Holiday Season

Holiday Season Happenings

December 7th, 2012

The beauty of the holiday season is always enhanced by the special events it inspires, and Provincetown offers some lovely indulgences for the spirit. Why not come and treat yourself to a heart-swelling performance, a fun meet-and-greet or other event?

One of the loveliest traditions of the season is the presentation of Handel’s Messiah. Composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel , it has become one of most frequently performed choral works in Western music.

December 7th at 7 pm is opening night for the original holiday musical “The Snowman in the Dunes at Provincetown Theater. This show tells the story of Yeti, the Abominable Snowman, who moves from the Himalayas to Provincetown to find his dream—acceptance and friendship. Yeti moves into a dune shack just before Christmas and meets two kids whose mother, Mrs. Galilee, runs the Sea Glass Inn. Mrs. Galilee has no time for “monsters in the dunes” because the bank is foreclosing on the inn while her wife is deployed overseas in Afghanistan. Can the family save the inn? Will Yeti become the friend he yearns to be? And will the magic and spirit of Christmas prevail and save the day? All these questions will be answered in “The Snowman in the Dunes”. You’ll be unable to resist this call to “Just Believe.” Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children, or $25 for a family of four and are available at the Provincetown Theater.

On Thursday, December, 12th, come join the staff of the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies for a glass of holiday cheer, peek into their operations at the Hiebert Marine Laboratory, and find out about their current work and upcoming events! Stop by between 5-7 pm and learn about their vital work.

On December 15th at 8 pm, join writer and Dateline Provincetown TV host Jim Brosseau, writer Dian Hamilton and singer Jack Kelly as they present songs and narration from a new musical entitled “Delicate Lessons”! The workshop at the Provincetown Theater, highlights music and lyrics written by Mr. Brosseau, a Provincetown resident with over 30 decades of writing experience in a variety of fields. No admission charge, but a goodwill donation is requested.

One of the loveliest traditions of the season is the presentation of Handel’s Messiah. Composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel , it has become one of most frequently performed choral works in Western music. On December 16th at 3 pm, the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra brings this seasonal gem to Provincetown Town Hall for a single performance, so you don’t want to miss out! Conducted by CCSO Artistic Director Jung-Ho Pak, the concert will feature solos from New England’s own Kristen Watson, Krista Rivers, Jason McStoots and Thomas Jones, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies. Save the whales while you savor the season! Tickets are available at The Crown and Anchor.

Also, don’t forget that the Winter Solstice occurs on December 21st at 6:12 am. In celebration of the event the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House will be holding their annual Winter Solstice Ritual and Celebration at 5 pm. Join others in celebrating our place in nature and our relationship to the Sun; bring a candle to light, an ornament of your choosing for the altar, and a potluck dish or dessert to share after the service (not required).

If you want to literally jazz up your holiday, head over to the Provincetown Art Association and Museum on December 22nd at 2 pm for a Holiday Concert and CD release party with Bart Weisman! The concert of Traditional Klezmer & Holiday Swing is part of PAAM’s Winter Jazz series and is free for PAAM members and $7 for all others.
