Varla Jean Merman.
Varla Takes a Victory Lap
Celebrating Ten Years Performing in Provincetown
By Kahrin Deines
June 18th, 2008
When she rides down Commercial Street on her pink bike, every auburn hair is in place, and a chorus of “Oh, look, there’s Varla” follows in her wake.

|
And that’s nothing compared to the excitement that surrounds her shows, which sell out all summer long. She is, in a word, iconic when it comes to the Provincetown entertainment scene.
And she is currently celebrating her 10th summer performing in Provincetown at a new venue, the Art House.

Varla, known outside of costume as Jeffery Roberson, is marking her decade with a special anniversary show, appropriately titled “Victory Lap Dance.” The show features both new songs and videos, and of course the myriad costume changes for which she is famous, as well as some of the best pieces from previous summers.
In honor of the anniversary, the shows will also be preceded by the first-ever Varla Jean Film Festival, featuring a compilation of favorite Varla skits.
Why all of the hullabaloo you may ask, if you’ve never seen her show.
It goes back to the perfectly coiffed hair. Just as every hair is in place, so are all the elements in a Varla Jean Merman show. Aside from an operatic voice, Varla is a size double D when it comes to personality. She’s a bit dim, but she has the charm of a Good Glenda gone unknowingly bad. And you never know what role she might assume next – a squirrel perhaps, or a German lederhosen-wearing ukelele chanteuse, or an opera star who can rap.
