Dina Martina - At The Crown and Anchor
By Kahrin Deines
June 18th, 2008
When Dina Martina first showed up in Provincetown in 2006 nobody knew what to make of the turkey suit she used when barking on Commercial Street.

It was, well, not your typical drag queen’s dress of choice.
But then Dina’s anything but typical. And once the crowds began to rave about her show, the unsightly turkey suit was forgiven.
And the camel toe. And the smeared lipstick. And her all-out, off-the-rocker creepy personality.
See, Dina’s got a way of making the horrific hilarious. She’s a celebrity from some schizzed out parallel world that looks enough like our own that it’s familiar, and enough unlike our own that we can bear to look deep into the cultural abyss.
And she’s back, this year dealing her deranged hilarity at The Crown and Anchor’s Cabaret in the 9 p.m. slot.
In her shows, Dina, who is the altar ego of Grady West, combines songs, dance and chit chat, wheeling from askew social concerns to delusions of celebrity.
She is also famous for her “gift parades,” which, since her mouth has a way of deforming words, is pronounced “jift.” You see she believes in soft g’s. And these moments of misconceived generosity give her a chance to mingle with her “peeps.” And keep you on your toes, until she blares into her next off-key number, leaving you to wonder where it’s all going, but unable to stop watching the disaster.
She is, truly, her own unsightly woman, and impossible not to love. You’ll just never really know why.
As Dina would say, “Check it out! Check it out!” It’s “off the charts!” Dina Martina is performing at The Crown and Anchor’s Cabaret this summer and fall. To find out about show times, visit www.onlyatthecrown.com or call 508.487.1430.
