Back on Mondays

Showgirls at The Crown and Anchor

June 13th, 2008

It’s Monday night, nearing 10 p.m. and many of the people walking along Commercial Street seem to be heading in an excited hurry towards The Crown and Anchor.

“Showgirls” take place on Monday nights at 10 p.m. at The Crown and Anchor.

If you don’t know why, then it’s time you found out. It’s time for you to attend Ryan Landry’s wild revue show “Showgirls,” which opened for the 2008 season again in May and will take place most Monday nights throughout the summer.

“Showgirls” is a show, or more accurately a series of shows within a show, that is hard to beat.

Styled as a revue show, “Showgirls” attracts an astonishing array of performers, from drag queens to chamber musicians. Since the set list is determined by both who’s in town and who’s summoned the nerve to take the stage that week, no two shows are ever the same.

To add to the excitement, each week a $500 prize is awarded to the best act, inspiring no end of wild shenanigans to win over the night’s audience, who choose the winner by cheers and hollering.

The novice performer is also the exception rather than the norm at “Showgirls,” as performers from all of Provincetown’s main stages and cabarets often make an appearance.

This makes Landry’s revue a great choice for visitors who want to sample the town’s entertainment options before they commit to a full show.

But be forewarned. There are no boundaries on a stage run by Mr. Landry – clothing may be removed and all taboos are fair game.

Although raucous, devotees of “Showgirls” are not without discernment about what is good entertainment. You never can tell what might happen on Monday night at The Crown, but you can count on its being one of the best shows you’ve seen in a long time.

“Showgirls” take place on Monday nights at 10 p.m. at The Crown and Anchor. To find out more about The Crown and Anchor’s summer entertainment lineup, visit www.onlyatthecrown.com or call 508.487.1430.
