Kate Clinton Performs at The Crown and Anchor

May 19th, 2008

Two words. Kate Clinton. Two more words. Laugh and learn.

''As much as I want people to cry, laugh, fall down in the aisle and blow drinks out their noses, I also think humor can be something to think about.” - Kate Clinton

That’s right, get ready to actually enjoy a lesson in politics when Kate takes the stage to perform her new show “Hilarity Clinton 2008” at The Crown and Anchor this summer and fall.

Kate’s been spinning news into sidesplitting pleasure for more than 25 years now, and she recently took a few moments to talk with Provincetown.com about her new show, politics, Provincetown and how she keeps the jokes coming.

“We’re testing reading skills,” Kate said of her plans for “Hilarity Clinton.” “It will be a show in transition because there’s lots happening.”

“I think what we’re in is this last gasp of straight white guys and the women who left them.”

Kate is performing her new show at The Crown and Anchor for three nights during Women's Week, from October 16 to 18.

How does she keep the jokes coming?

“It’s just pure pleasure – the immediacy of being able to write something and try it out that night,” Kate said.

“It operates on lots of different levels. First of all it’s a framework that assumes that people change. As much as I want people to cry, laugh, fall down in the aisle and blow drinks out their noses, I also think humor can be something to think about.”

What does Kate think about our current political landscape?

“It’s incredible. I just wish Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond were alive because it would kill them. We’ve had the illusion that we’re so post-racial, that we’re so post-feminist, and that’s not true, so it’s brought those things out of the closet.”

What will Kate be bringing out of the closet this summer?

You’ll have to see her show to find out: “I might write a brilliant three pages and after a couple of shows it turns into one line.”

But don’t expect her to shy away from the tender spots. “I think one of the most difficult summers performing was when I was at the Vixen in the lead up to the war. People would get up and leave. Now 81 percent of the country thinks we’re going the wrong way. I always think ‘What did you need to know’?”

Kate might not have been able to stop the Iraq War, but she hasn’t given up on using humor as a form of activism.

“As gay people in our outsider status, we can use humor to poke fun at things. I encourage people to laugh, just plain old laugh in people’s faces when they say something outrageous.”

Besides laughing at the wrongheaded, and of course during her show, what does Kate think you should do during your visit to Provincetown?

“Some people don’t really get out into nature and oh my god it’s just so stunning. I don’t think you can walk out the jetty in the west end with a problem and come back with it.”

Before you get here to see her show, how can you see Kate?

Kate’s been busy this winter and you can check out what’s she’s been up to through her winter vlog at Logo Online’s Visible Vote ’08 or at AfterEllen.com. She has also just released her 8th comedy album “Climate Change.”

“To me it’s a record of what I’ve been doing and I loved the show that I was doing last year. I would say it’s like the tail end of just plain Bush bashing.”

Kate Clinton is performing at The Crown and Anchor October 16 to 18. To find out more about Kate’s upcoming performances, visit kateclinton.com or www.onlyatthecrown.com.
