Jennie McNulty.
Walking Funny With . . .
Jennie McNulty at the Vixen
By Kahrin Deines
May 19th, 2008
Football, the ladies, and plenty of play . . . no, we’re not talking about a guy’s night out.
 | You know, if you can be out, be out. People need to know who we are.'' - Jennie McNulty |
|
We’re talking Jennie McNulty, who will be talking about these things and whatever else her audience steers her towards, during her comedy show at the Vixen’s Madeira Nightclub this summer.
“I like to play with the crowd, I like to talk to the crowd and talk about what they want to talk about,” said Jennie, during a recent interview with Provincetown.com.
Don’t worry, though, she’s not one of those performers that builds laughs out of cruelty.
“I usually [describe my show as] playfully sarcastic, because I really try not to be too mean-spirited with things. It doesn’t appeal to me as a comic and there’s enough of that out there in the world, so I just keep it light.”
“You’ll laugh a lot, and hopefully you’ll think a little bit.”
Visitors may remember Jennie from her shows at the Post Office Cabaret during the last two summers. And, if they missed her then, they can catch her now at jenniemcnulty.com or in her new vlog, “Walking Funny With .…”
Jennie’s a player on the California Quake football team, and she’s been an athlete her whole life. Her vlog, which is set to appear on AfterEllen.com soon, is a walking talk show featuring comedians and athletes that she encourages people to download and listen to at the gym or while they’re doing some other kind of physical activity.
“It’s fun, it’s hopefully going to get people out there moving around and getting in better shape.”
So far, Suzanne Westenhoeffer, Bridget McManus and Angela “Havoc” Mims have appeared on her vlog. While she’s in Provincetown, Jennie hopes to bring in some of the town’s many performers for a walk and talk.
Jennie thinks comedy is also good for physical and mental health. She says it can open doors, especially if you’re talking about gay issues.
“That’s why I think it’s so important I do something about coming out in my show. You know, if you can be out, be out. People need to know who we are. But I think for [some] us it’s a lot easier [than for others]. If you’re a teacher somewhere in a small town, you might not be able to come out. But I think if you can come out, the more that we are seen – we being the gay community – the sooner it will become accepted.”
How’d this football player get into comedy?
Well, it happened before she started playing for the California Quake.
“I was working in a research lab and there was a guy that I was working with and we were very similar in personalities. He was about ten years older than me and he was going through a midlife crisis, and I thought that’s me in ten years, I got to get out there and do something.”
In addition to her shows at the Vixen, Jennie will be part of a new women’s drag series that will most likely play every couple of weeks. New for this year, she will also be hosting a new show with other performers called “Queer on their Feet,” which will be kind of like a gay “Whose Line is it Anyway?” The show will likely take place in August.
Jennie McNulty is performing at the Vixen in July. To find out more about Jennie McNulty's showtimes, visit The Vixen’s Web site.
