Time for Boot Stomping
At the 16th Annual Gays for Patsy Spring Stomp
By Kahrin Deines
April 12th, 2008
It's time to grab your pardner and head to the hoedown, but you don’t need to head south for this one.
 | There will be classes in East Coast and West Coast swing, waltzing, two-step and cha cha. |
|
You can head east instead, because the Gays for Patsy 16th Annual Spring Stomp dance weekend is set to get the boots a-pumping the first weekend of May in Provincetown.
The Stomp will begin on Friday evening, May 2, with a Kickoff Dance at The Crown and Anchor's Paramount club. The evening will begin with a beginner’s two-step lesson and a line dance session, and then the open dancing will take over the floor, with Ed Quinan in the DJ booth. Music for two-step, line dancing, swing and waltz will all be included on the evening’s schedule.
The weekend will continue with a full day of dancing on May 3. Workshops will be available for both beginners and the more advanced movers to get everyone on a semi-equal footing before the weekend’s next open dance.
Simone Assboeck, a German ballroom dancer who can hustle, swing and also salsa, will start the day with a class in East Coast swing at the UU Meeting House. Meanwhile, Alan Gaskell, who has won a number of national champion awards, will be moving the floor with a waltz workshop at The Crown.
Classes in two-step, cha cha and West Coast swing will also be available.
On Saturday night, attendees can put all that learning into immediate practical use at the weekend's biggest event, a Spring Stomp Ball at Provincetown Town Hall from 8 to 11 p.m., with DJ Bucky Chappell. Pre-dance step tutorials will also be available, starting at 7:30 p.m.
A brunch will follow for those who have a few moves left in them on Sunday at The Crown and Anchor from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Since its formation in 1988, Gays for Patsy has brought partner dancing to New England's gay and lesbian community through a variety of events, workshops and retreats. In 1993, Gays for Patsy began the popular Lambda Ranch, a lesbian and gay friendly series of regular alcohol-free, smoke-free, social dances for country and western dance enthusiasts.
Gays for Patsy also frequently provides support to other non-profit organizations and the proceeds from the Spring Stomp will be given to SKIP, the Soup Kitchen in Provincetown.
