Provincetown Shoppers Go Wild with Twenty Bucks Each

June 19th, 2014

On a deliciously sunny day in Provincetown, this roving correspondent went out with three crisp Sawbucks to give away to three lucky summer visitors. A trio of young ladies looked like fun women on a mission so I approached them. Who isn’t a little taken aback by someone throwing money at them? But these vibrant college students, life-long friends Jing, Lucy and Gaby, love an adventure and seized the opportunity.

In regards to shopping, Lucy weighs in, “We find things here that we can’t find anywhere else.”

The three Shoppers-Going-Wild are North Newton High graduates on a weekend reunion. First stop is Womencrafts at 376 Commercial at the corner of Pearl. Women owned and operated for over three decades, we look at “Girls Rule” T-shirts, wind charms and other curios. Jing, Lucy and Gaby’s dynamic is well established; true pros in the art of browsing.

Chameleon, a boutique for juniors and misses, had grabbed their attention on a former browse about town. Located at 389 Commercial, the lower level space is lovely. Owned by Barbara Milstein, the seven year old enterprise has its own clothing line of yoga wear, separates and dresses made in Bali. The sales staff is friendly and knows how to create fun outfits.

Lucy zeroed in on a group of bohemian styled bracelets and picked out two for $9.00 each. Gaby had her eyes set on sunglasses and tried on many pairs with her shop mates weighing in. We decided on a metal pair with a copper finish for $18.00.

Jing went through a series of considerations in buying a necklace or earrings. She thinks about what she already owns, decides how a new addition will fit in and picked turquoise earrings that go with everything for $18.00. When I discover later that Jing Cox-Orell is at DePaul University in Chicago studying health science, it’s clear that she has the innate decision making skills to make a huge impact in that field.

Over coffee at the Wired Puppy at 379 Commercial with the rest of the cash, I find out more about this tight clan of women, such a gift in our screen-based times. Lucy Mazur-Warren is attending Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania for a degree in Studio Art and Photography. During a semester abroad in Florence, Italy, she studied Art History and created works with the new medium, iPhotography. I am curious to see them.

Gaby Perez-Deitz is an Art History and Anthropology major at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, and had a semester abroad in Bali, Indonesia. She is the calm one and has a worldly look about her as if travel will be a big part of her future.

All three love the laid back, relaxed atmosphere of the town and the beauty of the beaches. In regards to shopping, Lucy weighs in, “We find things here that we can’t find anywhere else.” You never know who’s shopping on Commercial Street in Provincetown and it was a delight to find out.
