The FarmMaid Kitchen

Notes from Land's End: Nov. 15

November 14th, 2011

Magical forces of alchemy must have been at work when Joe Freitas and Chris Getman asked Katie Reed and Josiah Mayo to combine a health food store with an authentic foods kitchen. Their collective enthusiasm brings local food, extraordinary cooking and organic products to Provincetown’s kitchens and baths.

Their collective enthusiasm brings local food, extraordinary cooking and organic products to Provincetown’s kitchens and baths.

I walk into 141 Market on a Saturday morning to attend Katie’s workshop “Healthy Holidays Cooking Class.” People of all ages and backgrounds are there to find out more about preparing dishes for Thanksgiving. Ms. Reed, a gourmet raw food chef, educator and organic permaculture farmer, is busy in the kitchen, preparing to demonstrate how to make Garlicky Greens, Ravey Mushroom Gravy, Mashed Maple Sweet Potatoes, Almond Butter Cups and Holiday Almond Nog.

Her mother, Colleen, and partner, Josiah Mayo, are busy preparing ingredients. The attendees are excited as customers come in and out of the inviting, lovely space.

For the next ninety minutes, Katie demonstrates for us how to make gourmet food that is absolutely delicious and energizing. Ms. Reed, who has taught worldwide, is masterful at it. At the end of the class, no one wanted to leave.

Raw vegan cooking workshops, ready-made dishes and soups, both hot and cold, are available daily.

In partnership with 141 Bradford Natural Market, FarmMaid Foods is also offering a luscious Thanksgiving menu, with both vegan and organic dishes. The Organic Sweet Potato Mash is out of this world as well as the locally famous Organic Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake, actually made with carrot juice.

141 Owners Joe Freitas and Chris Getman, formerly from Norwalk, Ct., had dreamed about finding a business in Provincetown and moving to Land’s End. When the market came up for sale, they grabbed the opportunity. Getman, who brings a lifetime of retail experience, and Freitas, a former technology director for a Fortune 500 company, have both made this store vibrant. “We love food and wanted to [own a business that would] improve our personal lifestyle.” says Freitas.

He is very excited about the local growers and harvesters of vegetables, fruits and poultry joining forces with FarmMaid Foods to bring ready-made, optimally nutritional food to Provincetown year round.

Want to order from their Thanksgiving menu, find out about classes, or try a truly delicious meal? Stop by 141 Bradford Natural Market or call 508-487-9784 for an awesome experience.
