Summer Dreaming

Planning for Your 2014 Provincetown Vacation

March 2nd, 2014

It's time to think summer vacations! Provincetown offers variety, fun, a gorgeous natural environment, and accommodations to suit any traveler, from those who prefer to stay close to nature to those who desire the ultimate in gracious waterfront living!

You'll find rentals as small as a one-bedroom cottage for a summer of fresh air and introspection, to full-sized homes to accommodate families and groups of friends sharing the space.

If you're a nature lover and prefer a campground, you have two great choices. Dunes Edge is located along Route 6 in Provincetown. This lovely site has a cute general store, only 85 spaces and super-clean shower facilities. Long owned by the Collinson family, the site is now under management by the Trustees of Reservations, to maintain the property as conservation land. Staff is friendly and helpful, and it’s only ten minutes from the heart of Commercial Street. Bring quarters for the coin operated showers! Walking paths in the area lead to the National Seashore, the Beech Forest and Race point Road. Off West Vine Street, you’ll find Coastal Acres Camping Court. Maintained by the Phillips and Perry families, this camping court is a favorite for seasonal renters and overnighters alike.

If you’re looking for weekly or seasonal rentals, there are a few key tips to make planning easier. First, know which week or weeks you want to come, decide how many bedrooms you want, how many people will be staying in the rental, and an idea of location. Do you want to be in the East End or West End? Do you prefer to park your car for the week and be within walking distance of the center of town? Also, decide how much you want to spend, and also tell the agent if you wish to bring your dog. In many instances, condo rentals may not allow dogs because their condo documents prohibit dogs for renters. On average, weekly rentals range from $850-$9,200 per week, again depending on location and quality. In general, seasonal rentals can range in quality and price from a low of $6,000 for the season, up to $23,000. The number one word of advice from rental agents is to PLAN EARLY. If you want to spend “holiday” periods such as Bear Week or Carnival, you need to book immediately, since those time periods fill up incredibly fast.

You'll find rentals as small as a one-bedroom cottage for a summer of fresh air and introspection, to full-sized homes to accommodate families and groups of friends sharing the space. One example of the latter is Herring Cove Village - Phase II, where you can rent an entire three-bedroom, four-bath townhouse in the West End of town for between $5,000-5,500 per week, which can be significantly more affordable than renting rooms in one of the better hotels/inns. Don't need quite that much room? Then try Bayshore, where you can find comfortable one and two-bedroom condos in a quiet neighborhood, many with fabulous harbor views! Many units are pet-friendly, and high-season rates start at $1,450 per week. Split the rent with a pal and you're got an affordable week's vacation!
