Spring's for Wise Visitors

See Provincetown Outside of its Summer Costume

December 2nd, 2007

When people think of Cape Cod, they tend to think of sunbathing on the area’s renowned beaches or other such summer exploits. Spring, however, has its virtues too.

Such trips can also be had at a significantly reduced rate than summer visits, as many of the town’s guesthouses offer discounted winter rates.

The summer crowds are otherwise occupied and the town has a peace and quiet that gives it just the right kind of tone for a relaxing getaway on the edge of the American world. In its tranquility, the layers of Provincetown's identity, from fishing village to artists’ colony and tourist destination, also seem to stand out in a higher definition.

During this time of year, the Atlantic Ocean also stands out in new profile, as its shifts between turbulence and calm grow more noticeable. The crowds are not yet thick and what remains is a vista of the water that suggests the boldness of the town’s early resident whalers, and of the fishermen who still fill their shoes today.

The beach also takes on a stark beauty that differs from its summer visage and the sunsets grow violent with bursts of bright color that testify to the simple rewards that are found in living life on the outskirts.

Meanwhile, the town itself seems to be resting and its serenity calls to be met with slow walks, lingering meals, leisurely shopping, and long and lazy afternoons.

A spring pilgrimage to Provincetown is ultimately an opportunity to see the town outside of its summer costumes and take a break from the quickened pace of the less real world. Such trips can also be had at lower rates than summer visits, as many of the town’s guesthouses offer discounts.
