Let the Waves Soften Your Edges

Provincetown's Beaches and Dune Lands Can Bring You Back to Life

April 7th, 2006

Thanks to Provincetown’s rich reserves of natural beauty, just being in its surroundings is a good way to return to oneself.

Mirage-like, the tidal flats shimmer for the eye in the searing summer heat, inviting their viewers to succumb into a brushed softness.

The allure of its beaches is widely lauded and its dune lands provide a view of simple peace, with only sands, curves, and the occasional scrub brush gliding into a seemingly endless distance. Vistas such as these invite reflection, perhaps even a few thoughts about the self’s insignificance, often leading those in their vicinity back to a balance in their life.

It is for exactly this reason that the ocean in the summer is popular everywhere, attracting many a sun bather with the powerful relaxant of its visage and voice. The Atlantic Ocean is no exception. There are many visitors to Provincetown’s beaches in the summer, but even though they are popular, it is also possible on most days to walk far enough along the shore’s curve to find a relatively private and isolated spot if you so desire.

In addition to the soothing sound of its waves, the ocean contributes to the renewal of its devotees with its salt air and water. Long believed to have curative power, salt air permeates every part of Provincetown and a soaking in the ocean’s saline waters can be sought either along the seashore, or in the Provincetown Harbor, a slightly warmer and calmer option.

The ocean, however, is not the only place of beauty in Provincetown. In fact, the dunes, tidal flats, and forests of the Cape Cod National Seashore’s Province Lands are each the ocean’s equal in loveliness. Mirage-like, the tidal flats shimmer for the eye in the searing summer heat, inviting their viewers to succumb into a brushed softness, and the serenity of the dunes makes a meditative mood impossible to avoid.

Even if you will not have much time to explore the Province Lands on your trip, or if you are adverse to the sand and sun of the beach, sometimes just a few moments at the end of MacMillan Pier looking out at Provincetown Harbor can change everything.

The town is blessed with so much beauty that it's hard to remain unaware of the luck and luster of life when you are here.
