Norris Church Mailer and Ted Chapin. |
Three Great Artists
Notes from Lands End: June 14
By Laura Shabott
June 14th, 2010
Rumor has it that there are no working artists living in Provincetown anymore. Anyone who thinks that is reading the wrong blogs. This local scribe has looked at the work of hundreds of painters, sculptors and artisans who call Provincetown home. Three standouts are Chris Martinez, Polly Cote and Ted Chapin, who bring a fresh point of view to their craft.

The Art Reach Program at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum is an out-of-school creative program for talented high school students. From October to May, three afternoons a week, these young adults give up leisure for learning. The lovechild of Lynn Stanley, Tracey Anderson and Liz Carney, Art Reach has garnered national attention.
“Astonishing” is the only word I have to describe the Requiem composed by Chris Martinez, age 18, in this program. A Missa pro Defunctis, Mass for the Dead, is a composer’s right of passage and this young man has accomplished this before he is twenty. A computer and head phones were placed against a wall at the Program’s 2010 exhibition, “Believe in Wonderland”. I put on the head phones and listened to a rap song about Hamlet. I didn’t young people even knew about Shakespeare anymore, let alone recreate his work. Fantastic!

Cortile means courtyard in Italian. From its former location down the path by the UU to a stunning debut with both a gallery and artists studios on Commercial Street, the Filiberto duo brings world class curatorial skills, good painting and studios to the middle of town. Now, that’s a work of art. Brava, A. Paul and Kerry! Among Cortile’s A-list roster is Polly Cote. It is my firm belief that a great painter must know how to draw from life. Polly is a master of the figure in ink. Her monoprints, alive with color and wonderful composition, also caught my eye. Give yourself a treat and go see her work.
When Ted Chapin painted his home in an extraordinary deep cabernet, I was curious. Who is this person? A multi-faceted artist, with architectural roots, Ted has designed the Bolted Wearable Art Series. It was serendipity to run into Norris Church Mailer selecting the “Botticelli” pendant and the “Whooping Cranes on Mahogany” earrings. Now represented by Michael Carroll at the Schoolhouse Gallery, this jewelry is a brilliant mix of romance and high craftsmanship.
These three Provincetown artists are a testament to the great work and the wonderful venues that represent our talented village.
