Secret Gardens Unveiled
At PAAM's 11th Annual Tour and Exhibit
By Kahrin Deines
June 29th, 2008
When most people think about Provincetown, they think of the Outer Cape’s beautiful beaches or its unique dune landscape. But Provincetown’s allure also lies in the town itself, in the lovely ship captains’ mansions that line its streets and the glorious gardens that surround them.
 | Along with the tour, the museum also hosts an exhibit of artworks inspired by garden scenes, which will this year feature work by 19 artists. |
|
Along with the gardens that are always on public view, Provincetown is also home to many lovely private gardens, some of which can be viewed during an annual event that will take place this year on July 13. Known as the Secret Garden Tour, this event brings the beauty of these hidden enclaves to an audience numbering in the hundreds for one day only.
The Provincetown Art Association and Museum began presenting the annual Secret Garden Tour 11 years ago to draw attention to the inspirational role that gardens often play in the creation of art.

Along with the tour, the museum also hosts an exhibit of artworks inspired by garden scenes, which will this year feature work by 19 artists. Each of the artists chose a work from the museum’s permanent collection to interpret in their own style.
For the 11th Annual Secret Garden Tour, the museum has assembled a roster of 10 secret Provincetown gardens, which will be open to the public between 10 and 3 p.m. The tour always showcases a rich variety of garden types, some distinguished by their exotic inhabitants and others by the inspired use of more common flowers.
Since it began in 1998, the tour has flowered rapidly, jumping from an attendance of just over 100 in its first year to over 600 in the last few. Just like the gardens they come to visit, the tour goers represent a diverse mix; they are artists, horticulturalists, garden society members and the people who simply love beauty.
This year the landscape architect and Harvard University professor Priscilla Randall will also give a lecture on “Eco-Elegance” in anticipation of the tour on July 8. She will discuss the evolution of garden design, tracing its shape from 15th century France to the present.
Tickets for the Secret Garden Tour cost $30, and include admission to the museum’s galleries for the “Art of the Garden” exhibition. The museum uses the proceeds to support its year-round series of exhibits and educational opportunities. Free parking is available for the event at Benson, Young & Downs Insurance Agency, located at 32 Howland Street, and at Gately-McHoul’s Funeral Home at the end of Harry Kemp Way. There will also be a shuttle making continuous stops between the parking lots and gardens throughout the day.
To find out more or to buy tickets, call 508.487.1750. Information is also available on the museum’s Web site. The Provincetown Art Association and Museum is located at 460 Commercial Street.
