Film on the Edge

At the Provincetown International Film Festival

June 5th, 2008

Provincetown lives on the edge. For more than two centuries, it has survived as a town on a narrow spit of land at the end of the Cape Cod land spiral. The wildly disparate, from whalers and artists, to gays and lesbians, have all found a home in its independent culture. And every summer it shakes off the winter to throw a season-long party.

The 2008 Filmmaker on the Edge Award will be awarded to Quentin Tarantino.

In short, Provincetown thrives by being outcast into the Atlantic.

It is only fitting then that once a year the town hosts a Film Festival that is dedicated to honoring filmmakers who refuse to let convention badger their work into predictable forms.

Now in its 10th year, the Provincetown International Film Festival brings together film lovers and filmmakers from all over the world who love to see the medium taken to its limits.

This year the Film Festival will take place between June 18 and 22, with a full schedule of more than 126 films and other events.

Three filmmakers will be honored during the festival. The 2008 Filmmaker on the Edge Award will be awarded to Quentin Tarantino.

Meanwhile, the Excellence in Acting Award will go to Gael García Bernel, who has starred in, among other films, “Y Tu Mamá También” and in “The Motorcycle Diaries” as Che Guevara. In addition, Jane Lynch will receive the Faith Hubley Memorial Award.

Over the course of its four days, the festival will feature more documentaries, dramatic features, and shorts than would-be viewers can hope to see. The schedule is available for preview at www.ptownfilmfest.org.

There are also a number of annual Film Festival traditions that attendees will not want to miss, such as the annual “Night at the Drive-In,” a daily breakfast with industry professionals, and a “Sing-Along,” which will this year feature the film “Hairspray.”

The Provincetown International Film Festival will occur between June 18 and 22. For more information about the festival, or to buy tickets to major events, go to www.ptownfilmfest.org.
