Transitions and Transcendance

Fantasia Fair and Provincetown Round-Up

October 15th, 2012

Transitions and Transcendance: Fantasia Fair and Provincetown Round-Up

This year’s event, scheduled for October 16th, honors Mara Keisling, founding Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, with the 2012 Virginia Prince Transgender Pioneer Award.

Yes, it’s mid-October, but don’t “sashay away” just yet! Whether you are a new, questioning transgender person, or established with a partner or family, you know how few places there are where you can relax and completely be yourself. That’s why the upcoming Fantasia Fair is such a godsend to the TG community! Running from October 14-21, the “Fan Fair” is the longest-running annual event in the transgender world. It is a place where TG people and their SOs (significant others) can learn, grow, play and develop community.

According to the program letter from Miqqi Alicia Gilbert, FanFair’s Executive Director, ” Through the Fair I learned that I do not have to apologize for who and what I am, that there are many people like me, and that accepting myself is more important than being accepted by the rule-makers. I sincerely hope that if you are in the early stages of your journey that the Fair can do for you what it has done for so many others.”

The week kicks off with a performance by comic Ian Harvie on October 15th at the Boatslip. Called one of “11 Comedians to See LIVE in 2012 “ by Crave Online, Ian has been seen in Margaret Cho's: The Sensuous Woman, MTV's LOGO: "One Night Stand Up" as well as numerous clubs such as "Mottley’s Comedy Club", "The Laughing Skull", "The Improv", The Funny Bone", and dozens of festivals.

During Fantasia Fair, you can attend any of over 50 workshops, daily keynote addresses, a welcome reception, a fashion show, a choice of whale watch or dune tour on Wednesday, the Fantasia Follies, “Dinner and A Show,” and the annual awards banquet. This year’s event, scheduled for October 16th, honors Mara Keisling, founding Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, with the 2012 Virginia Prince Transgender Pioneer Award.

Later in the week, the 25th Annual Provincetown Round Up runs from October 17-21, and provides fellowship and fun for LGBT (and other) individuals in recovery from alcohol and drugs. Yes, you can have a BALL as a sober person! The five-day event begins Wednesday with a pizza and ice cream “meet and greet” followed by a free movie night – bring your pajamas! On Thursday night there will be a performance by the We Are Not Saints comedy troupe, with a question-and-answer session to follow.

The Round Up schedule features numerous meetings for those in AA, NA, Overeaters Anonymous, Nicotine Anonymous and Al-Anon, as well as workshops, a Cabaret night on Friday, a buffet lunch on Saturday, a 12-mileNational Seashore Bike Ride, a 3-mile Fun Run, yoga on Saturday and Sunday morning, and a choice of either a Bingo game at the Provincetown Inn or Saturday Night Sober Dance at the Crown and Anchor! The week closes with a Rounddown Dinner at the Top of the Lobster Pot on Sunday night.
