It’s raining cats and dogs on the Outer Cape

May 13th, 2009

Provincetown loves, loves, LOVES its cats and dogs! Pooches and their owners have morning rituals to the beach, the coffee shops or the new dog park. We know these dogs by name and greet them like friends. Cats living on Commercial Street like white China live different places each year. Rocky, my favorite cat ever, used to shop and hang out at an ATM machine to meet people. I kid you not.

Pet friendly accommodations and restaurants make Provincetown THE place to come with “man’s best friend”.

“God is dog spelled backwards” is inscribed at the Pilgrim Bark Park, on the corner of Shankpainter and Route 6. A wonderful creation inspired by a doggie park in Key West, Candace Nagle and her triumvirate of women have designed a fenced off leash environment with benches donated by TREX, animal themed sculptures (the whale’s tail is gorgeous) and room to roam with two sections for small and large dogs. In cooperation with the town, the Pilgrim Bark Park is an example of using a space that would have been vacant. Bring your dog from Dawn to Dusk where the people have as much fun as the dogs.

Tea Dance, the Boatslip’s iconic party, hosts a fundraiser during PAW, Pet Appreciation Weekend September 25-27 where dogs and their owners party for CASAS, the no kill animal shelter. Scores of canines go to tea dance like people, meeting and mingling to the DJ beat! Visionary Carol MacDonald and her supporters worked tirelessly to create a safe harbor for cats, socializing feral kittens and offer subsidized spaying and neutering in Provincetown. On Sandy Hill Lane, open to the public 2-4 daily, this facility is a tribute to compassion.

The services for dogs and cats grow each year, with medical care, groomers, accessory retailers and food fully stocked at the grocery and health food store. Pet friendly accommodations and restaurants make Provincetown THE place to come with “man’s best friend”.
