At the Annual Mailer Conference - Oct. 16 to 19
By Kahrin Deines
September 25th, 2008
Over the years, Provincetown has been home to many a famous artist. But there is no other as well known or as notorious as the great American writer Norman Mailer, who began visiting the town in the ‘40s and made it his home starting in the ‘90s.
 | The first day of the conference will be devoted to remembering Normal Mailer, with tributes from members of the Provincetown community and members of the Norman Mailer Society. |

To celebrate Mailer’s life and work, an annual conference is held in Provincetown every fall. This year the Norman Mailer Conference, which will take place from Oct. 16 to 19, nearly a year after his death last November, will be dedicated to the theme of “Memory and Afterlife.”
The first day of the conference will be devoted to remembering Normal Mailer, with tributes from members of the Provincetown community and members of the Norman Mailer Society. There will also be a screening of “Normal Mailer: The Sanction to Write.”
Numerous panel discussions with scholars and friends of Mailer will take place over the following three days, dealing with topics as diverse as Mailer’s metaphysics and electronic representations of Mailer.
Among the featured panel speakers is Keith Bergman, Provincetown’s former town manager, who will share memories of his interactions with “citizen Mailer” over the years. J. Michael Lennon, Mailer’s archivist and biographer, will also present at the conference, sharing excerpts from the author’s correspondence, which comprises more than 50,000 letters.
In all more than 30 scholars will present papers and thoughts about Mailer’s work during the four-day affair.
For the conference, Christopher Ricks, a professor of poetry at Oxford University, will also speak in a keynote address on Oct. 18 about Mailer’s use of rhythms. And Christopher Busa, founder and editor of the magazine “Provincetown Arts,” will lead a literary walking tour of Provincetown on Oct. 17.
