Fireworks over the Harbor

A One-of-a-Kind Display

June 29th, 2008

Boom, crack … ooh, ahh – fireworks are let loose to shower the sky with color, whistles and bangs mark their ascent, and then a series of appreciative gasps pick up the tune on their descent.

Enjoy Provincetown's fireworks from the beach, a bar, or a boat.

It’s the soundtrack of the Fourth of July everywhere in the United States. In Provincetown, though, the celebratory song has one more special element, which makes the display especially unforgettable.

It’s the sound of the waves of Provincetown Harbor. And with it comes the sight of the fireworks’ reflection in the harbor’s rocking waters.

It goes like this: Booms and cracks are carried into echo over the water’s surface and joined by the rhythm of the waves’ gentle repetitions. And then, the oohs and ahhs join in for the chorus, with the fireworks exploding first above and then below, once in the sky and once in the water, their colors coursing across every view.

Meanwhile, you might be digging your toes into the gritty comforting wrap of the sand on the town’s beach, which is one of the best places to watch the display. Or perhaps enjoying a cocktail at one of the many waterfront bars.

You could even be on a boat, surrounded by the bursts of falling color. Or high above it all, near the Pilgrim Monument on High Pole Hill, where you can see the twisting shape of the Cape illuminated by the night’s display.

But wherever you are, you’ll be adding your own oohs and ahhs to the soundtrack, because it’s just too beautiful to stay silent.
