Gay Pilots Gather

At the 2007 Annual Cape Cod Classic

September 10th, 2007

Gay people fly into Provincetown all of the time. But there’s only one weekend of the year when large numbers of gay pilots fly, ferry and drive into town and this is the weekend of the annual Cape Cod Classic, a gathering at land’s end for gay pilots and other aviation professionals sponsored by the National Gay Pilots’ Association (NGPA).

The weekend will take flight with a reception party and buffet dinner at The Crown and Anchor’s Paramount Room on September 14 and will continue without delay through a series of meetings, banquets and gatherings.

This year the Cape Cod Classic will take place between September 14 and 16, with a full schedule of events designed to bring members of the LGBT community who work in the aviation industry together for one weekend of networking and fun.

The weekend will take flight with a reception party and buffet dinner at The Crown and Anchor’s Paramount Room on September 14 and will continue without delay through a series of meetings, banquets and gatherings until its close on September 16 with a “Survivor’s Dinner” at the Lobster Pot Restaurant.

Two keynote speakers will be in Provincetown to address Cape Cod Classic attendees during the weekend. At a meeting on September 15, Dr. Quay Snyder, the president of Virtual Flight Surgeons, will speak about Federal Aviation Administration protocols concerning HIV and other medical issues, while later in the day, Major Jeff McGowen, a retired officer and the author of “Major Conflict,” a book about the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell,” will speak during an evening banquet.

Other weekend highlights include a barbeque hosted by Cape Air at the Provincetown Airport, with a “Queen of the Fleet” contest, as well as a Silent Auction at The Crown and Anchor to benefit the NGPA’s Education Fund, which will include a flight on the Waco GXE among its bidding items.

The National Gay Pilot’s Association is a social and professional organization for gay and lesbian pilots with over 800 members. Although most of its members are gay pilots, the association welcomes lesbian, bisexual and transgender members, as well as other members of the aviation community, from students to flight attendants, air traffic controllers and others. In addition to hosting events throughout the year, the NGPA also publishes a quarterly magazine and hosts “Members Only” web discussion boards. The NGPA also provides scholarships to students pursuing careers as professional pilots and has awarded over $60,000 in scholarship money since 1998.
