PMPM Centennial Celebration

A Parade, Reenactment, and Exhibits

August 18th, 2007

Provincetown just can’t stop celebrating. Right on the heels of the annual Carnival, which drew record crowds to Commercial Street to witness a parade of magnificent floats and costumes, there is going to be another town-wide celebration. This next celebration, on August 20, will also include a parade, this time from MacMillan Pier all the way to the Pilgrim Monument.

In conjunction with the centennial, there are also a number of special exhibits at the Provincetown Museum.

Presented in honor of the centennial anniversary of the laying of the Pilgrim Monument’s cornerstone, the event will begin as celebrants, dignitaries and Grand Master Masons from all over Massachusetts arrive by boat in Provincetown’s harbor in the morning. Just as they did on August 20 of 1907, these visitors will join celebrants already in town to march to the top of High Pole Hill, where there will be a reenactment of the laying of the cornerstone.

The celebration of the centennial will be marked by many fine details. As the ships enter Provincetown’s harbor, the Kalmar Nyckel, a tall ship from Delaware, will fire off a cannon salute. Meanwhile, when the parade reaches the Monument at 1 p.m., the belfry that was recently returned to the top of Provincetown’s Library will be tolled for the first time.

In conjunction with the centennial, there are also a number of special exhibits at the Provincetown Museum. The largest, “Centennial Treasures,” presents a selection of 100 favorite artifacts from the museum’s extensive collection of over 3000 items. Two smaller exhibits, “King Hiram’s Lodge” and “Provincetown in 1907,” take respective looks at the town’s Masonic chapter and the contents of a time capsule that was placed in the monument’s cornerstone.

The centennial of the laying of the cornerstone is the premier kickoff event for a yearlong celebration of the Pilgrim Monument’s anniversary that will continue into next summer.
