Provincetowns Greatest Treasure

Cape Cod National Seashore

July 15th, 2016

It's the height of summer, and there's no better time to celebrate the wondrous natural environment which lures so many to Provincetown's portion of the Cape Cod National Seashore, especially in this, the 100th anniversary of the National Parks!

Try the Historic Province Lands Bicycle Tour, Friday mornings from 9-11 am! Join a ranger for a group ride along the challenging Province Lands Bicycle Trail, the first bike trail created by the National Park Service.

It's always best to stop at one of the National Seashore Visitor Centers to get your bearings and pick up some useful information and permits. The The Province Lands Visitor Center is located at 171 Race Point Road, off Route 6, and is open daily from May 1st to October 31st, from 9 AM to 5 PM. The observation deck provides a 360-degree view of the Province Lands dunes, the Outer Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. From this location you can see Race Point Ranger Station, Race Point Beach, the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station and the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown. There are also exhibits, an indoor theater screening short films, and a gift shop! You can also attend their free Marine Lecture Series on Thursday mornings from 11 am to noon, through August 25th. Coming up: “Ocean World and the Specter of Climate Change” on 7/14; “Seals of Cape Cod – A Success Story” on 7/21; and “Whales of Cape Cod” on 7/28, in honor of the Center for Coastal Studies' annual Whale Week!

Also on Thursday mornings between 8-9 am, early risers and bird watchers will enjoy the Seashore's “Beech Forest Birding” tours. The Beech Forest trail is an important stop for migrating birds, as well as home to year-round avian residents. Bring binoculars and meet at the Beech Forest parking area, off Race Point Road. This program is also free!

Start your Friday morning with the serenity of Cape Cod Bay and join a ranger and a certified yoga instructor for an interdisciplinary yoga class geared to all levels! Meet at Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown, and ask at the fee booth whether the program will be on the north or south end of the parking lot. Reserve at www.recreation.gov (24 hours) or call 1-877-444-6777 (10 AM to midnight). Reservations required and accepted beginning at 10 AM one week in advance of the program date. There is a fee of $11 per lesson for this activity, which runs through late August from 8:30-9:45 am.
Want a more athletic activity? Try the Historic Province Lands Bicycle Tour, Friday mornings from 9-11 am! Join a ranger for a group ride along the challenging Province Lands Bicycle Trail, the first bike trail created by the National Park Service. Learn about bicycling safety, enjoy dune and ocean views, and discover the fascinating history of the area. Bring your own bike and helmet (required). Meet at the bike rack in the parking lot at the Province Lands Visitor Center. Free!

You'll find a variety of hikes, trails and activities, including a great “Tidal Flats Foray” that meets at the Provincetown breakwater on select Mondays and Saturdays (fee applies). Visit the National Seashore site for more detailed information and schedules! Finally, remember to be SHARK SAFE!

In celebration of the Center for Coastal Studies' 40th Anniversary, take a Sunset Whale Watch on Dolphin Fleet with CCS scientists and staff, interpretation by a Center naturalist, delicious food and drink, and a front-row seat from Long Point to Stellwagen Bank to see whales, dolphins, sea birds, seals, sunsets and possibly a glorious moonrise on the return trip. Tickets are $100/members, $120 for non-members. To make a reservation, visit their website!

On July 29th, a Birthday Party will be held at the Bas Relief in Provincetown during the Center’s sixth annual Whale Week – a Celebration of the Sea! Come Sink a Center Scientist in a dunk tank, participate in the Whale Olympics, and help blow out the 40 candles on the cake! Proceeds from all 40th Anniversary events will benefit the Center’s research/rescue/education programs.
