Sail Away on Wind and Waters

July 30th, 2015

In summer, nothing compares to the cooling breeze and wondrous sense of freedom gained from an hour or a day out on the water! You’ll find numerous charter boats to satisfy a craving for “sea time”!

When the engine is turned off and the sails fill with wind, the Bay Lady II glides quietly across the Bay with grace and beauty.

Following a five-year hiatus from Provincetown waters -- the Schooner Hindu returns for its third year, offering two 90-minute day sails, a two-hour sunset sail, and private charters! Built in 1925 at East Boothbay Maine, it sailed the waters of Cape Cod Bay for 54 years. It's 79 feet long and seats 35, although on sunset sails, they limit passenger load to 22 for a more intimate environment. Owned and extensively restored by the Rowan family of Key West, the captain Joshua Rowan is a seasoned captain and the owner's son. It carries a crew of 10, with occasional guest crew members as well. For a sail replete with the romance of a bygone era, you can book online at their website for regularly scheduled sails, or call for information on private charters. Day sails depart at 1 pm and 3 pm, and the sunset sail currently departs at 6:30 pm (changes based on time of sunset). They are located on MacMillian Pier at slip number 10W, just in front of the Whydah Pirate Museum, and tickets are $35 for day sails and $50 for sunset sails

If the Hindu is booked you can head to the very next berth for a similar sail on the lovely 73-foot, traditional gaff rig schooner, the Bay Lady II. When the engine is turned off and the sails fill with wind, the Bay Lady II glides quietly across the Bay with grace and beauty. Each trip is unique, as the varied moods of wind and sea determine the course! Ably handled by the charming Captain Bob Burns and his friendly and efficient crew, the Bay Lady also offers three daily trips and a sunset cruise, where passengers are allowed to bring well-behaved dogs who are good sailors (notify in advance). I can attest to the gorgeous sunset views and the serene relaxation of their Sunset Cruise, which I enjoyed last season! Tickets for daytime trips are $28 and sunset sails are $33. Children ride for $15 on all trips!

For my birthday two years ago, I treated myself to a sunset sail on a 30-foot cutter rigged cruiser called Moondance II, and discovered that it's owned by local pal Rosemary, who with business partner Sue runs Dog Gone Sailing Charters! A trip with “Captain Ro” and crew is small and intimate (max. 6 passengers). You can make a reservation on their website for a 1 ½ hour “shrimp sail”, a full day trip to Stellwagen Bank to see whales, a sunset sail, a very intimate wedding with additional packages, and more. Dog Gone Sailing also welcomes you to cruise with your canine pal, or just hang out with “Mini-Mate,” a Malti-Poo who's the boat's official mascot!

Finally, if you prefer to “sail” in the air, check out Provincetown Parasail and enjoy a chance to fly over the harbor on a memorable parasail adventure! How brave are you? You can choose a “sail” at 600, 900 or 1,200 feet (which entitles you to a “High Flyers” T-shirt), and if you want a permanent memento of the day, you can add on a photo package, or a hi-definition Go Pro video! View the entire bay, see the whales from on high,, and try a “sailing trip” you'll never forget! Reservations are required; and ./there is a six person limit on each trip. Rates from $89-129; see their website for reservation information.

Summer days on the water – what could be better? Come sail away today!
