Come Sail Away!

July 8th, 2014

In summer, nothing compares to the cooling breeze and wondrous sense of freedom gained from an hour or a day on the water cruising! We have numerous charter boats to satisfy anyone craving “sea time”!

Built in 1925 at East Boothbay Maine and modeled after a Grand Banks fishing schooner, it sailed the waters of Cape Cod Bay for 54 years.

After a five-year hiatus from Provincetown waters, the Schooner Hindu has returned for this summer, offering three two-hour day sails, a sunset sail, and private charters for a morning, a full day, or a sunset, or weddings and private parties. Built in 1925 at East Boothbay Maine and modeled after a Grand Banks fishing schooner, it sailed the waters of Cape Cod Bay for 54 years. It's 79 feet long and seats 35, although on sunset sails, they limit passenger load to 22 for a more intimate environment. Owned and extensively restored by the Rowan family of Key West, the captain Joshua Rowan is a seasoned captain and the owner's son. It carries a crew of 10, with occasional guest crew members as well. For a sail replete with the romance of a bygone era, you can book online at their website for regularly scheduled sails, or call for information on private charters.

If the Hindu is booked you can head to the very next berth for a similar sail on the lovely 73-foot, traditional gaff rig schooner, the Bay Lady II. When the engine is turned off and the sails fill with wind, the Bay Lady II glides quietly across the Bay with grace and beauty. Each trip is unique, as the varied moods of wind and sea determine the course! Ably handled by the charming Captain Bob Burns and his friendly and efficient crew, the Bay Lady also offers three daily trips and a sunset cruise, where passengers are allowed to bring well-behaved dogs who are good sailors (notify in advance). I can attest to the gorgeous sunset views and the serene relaxation of their Sunset Cruise, which I enjoyed last season – my hair was a mess from the breeze, but I felt like a million dollars!

I've always admired a 30-foot cutter rigged cruiser called Moondance II, but only learned recently that it's owned by local pal Rosemary, who with business partner Sue runs Dog Gone Sailing Charters! A trip with “Captain Ro” and crew is small and intimate (max. 6 passengers). You can make a reservation on their website for a 1 ½ hour “shrimp sail, a full day trip to Stellwagen Bank to see whales, a sunset sail, a very intimate wedding with additional packages, and more. Dog Gone Sailing also welcomes you to cruise with your canine pal, or if you prefer to leave Poochie at home, you might garner a cuddle from “Mini-Mate,” a Malti-Poo who's the boat's official mascot!

Don't want stray showers to ruin your day? Try the Harbor Star tour boat because this 40' motorized cruiser is fully covered with roof and roll down sides! They offer multiple 75-minute narrated day cruises and a 75 minute “Critter Cruise” each morning for kids, who can help pull a lobster pot, take pictures with the creatures and then release them. Everyone can enjoy views of the sea floor and its inhabitants courtesy of the ship's PICO underwater video camera! Their bar is stocked with beer, liquor, soda, bottled water, and snacks like pretzels and chips. Their two-hour sunset cruise will often include live music (call for schedule). They also are available for private wedding, birthday-party or night cruises, and with a seating capacity of 49 passengers, they can accommodate a quite a few guests!

Summer days on the water – what could be better? Come sail away today!
