Notes from Lands' End - Aug. 28
Dog days of Summer
By Laura Shabott
September 1st, 2009
In the dog days of summer, people flock here for a dose of Provincetown before Labor Day, the official end of summer. I strolled around the bustling village on a hot, hot day to find out what visitors and townies alike do to beat the heat.
 | Most everyone thought the perfect thing to do is lay in an air-conditioned room naked, with someone else, also naked. |

The favorite ice cream this year is chocolate raspberry from Lewis Brothers, made to perfection. Next in line was the frozen yogurt by Bliss in any flavor. Most people LOVE ice cream, but others preferred to cool off with a beverage like lemonade or a tall Seven and Seven. The standout thirst quencher on a hot day was beer, an icy cold Corona with lime or a Coors Lite.
Are you a beach or a pool person, I asked about. A lot of people surprisingly like to look at the beach from the pool, especially if there are children with boundless energy. The Cape Inn (formerly Holiday Inn) got five stars for being very kid friendly while the Crown and Anchor and the Boatslip cater to adults who just want to have fun, like kids. Townies meet at the Provincetown Inn for a real day off with a pool, beach and frozen drink right there!

My next question was about water sports. People like to do all kinds of things, like cliff diving, jet skiing and body surfing, but most folks just want to throw on a bathing suit and take a swim in the ocean. Among all the sports that involve a boat, kayaking was top on the list with an easy rental from Venture Athletics.
Then I asked, with great anticipation, what people love to do most on a dog day. One barker loves watching girls in skirts, another barker watches guys in shorts but most everyone thought the perfect thing to do is lay in an air-conditioned room naked, with someone else, also naked. In the era of Facebook and Tweeter, it warmed my heart to think that people still want to hang out naked, without a laptop, and talk!
